Economic Development
Economic Assistance Program - Eastern Nigeria
Extensive field evaluations carried out in Eastern Nigeria and in several other parts of Nigeria and sub-Sahara Africa, over the past 12 months, has clearly indicated to us that ONE of the BIGGEST contributors to poverty in sub-Saharan Africa today, is the lack of employment for able-bodied young men and women. This situation is very acute in Eastern Nigeria.
There is an overwhelming trend occurring wherein graduates coming
out of secondary and post-secondary schools are unable to
secure meaningful employment. In the Igboland states of Abia,
Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, Imo, parts of Delta, Rivers, etc, employers are
either non-existent, the job-seekers lack the
necessary skills required by the few existing
employers, or the required skills to start a business are not available.
As a result, the youth with the required skills are seeking employment in more developed countries around the world, resulting in
a "brain drain" for Igboland, Nigeria, and Africa.
Without meaningful sources of income, these young people, the hope of Africa's future, will not
be able to feed, nurture, clothe, house and
educate their children. The cycle of poverty will
continue perpetually.
One of ICA's main focus areas is therefore to provide the financial resources required to undertake
the development of projects that will assist in the start-up
of small and medium sized businesses. This will then increase the availability of local
employment to impact the economic development, and consequently aid in poverty
alleviation in this region of Nigeria today.
